South Portland Historical Society operates a museum on the grounds of Bug Light Park. The 9-acre scenic park was built on the site of the former WWII Liberty shipyards, overlooks Portland Harbor and the Casco Bay islands, and is home to the Portland Breakwater Lighthouse (aka Bug Light), the Liberty Ship Memorial, a public boat launch, and offers walking paths.
The historical society's museum and gift shop are open daily, 10am-4pm, from May to October, and also on weekends in November and December. The museum is run almost entirely by volunteers and admission is free; however donations are most welcome. The society maintains historic archives and a research room; researchers and genealogists should make an appointment in advance to ensure proper staffing.
DIRECTIONS: To reach the museum, take Broadway east to the ocean, then turn left onto Breakwater Drive and then right onto Madison Street that leads right into the park.
